Best British-Style Fish Batter for Fish & Chips Recipe

My husband is English and one of the dishes he's most particular about is fish & chips. Now, I've tried many recipes over the years and the one I've stuck to is the best and most simple of them all!

No, you DON'T need any eggs for it, but you DO need some beer. So whether or not you're a beer drinker, you really MUST grab at least one bottle if you want your batter to come out just right!

What You'll Need

Service Size: 8 to 10 large pieces

  • 8 - 6oz cod fillets | 273 Calories per serving

  • 3/4 bottle beer (we used Corona for this recipe) | 14 Calories per serving

  • 1 1/2 cup of flour | 85 Calories per serving

  • 1 tsp of baking powder | 1 Calorie per serving

  • black pepper to taste | 0 Calories per serving

  • salt to taste | 0 Calories per serving

  • at least 8 oz (depending on the size of your fryer and fish) vegetable oil for frying | 251 Calories per serving


  1. Put flour in a large bowl

  2. Add the baking powder

  3. Add the beer slowly

  4. Add a dash of salt and pepper

  5. Then mix really really well

  6. Make sure your fish is completely covered by the batter

  7. Pre-heat fryer with oil (fish must be able to soak all the way into the oil)

  8. When fryer is completely hot, place fish covered batter into the super hot fryer of oil

  9. Wait at least 2 to 3 minutes or until you notice the batter brown enough to turn

  10. Once both sides are brown and crisp, remove it from the fryer

  11. ENJOY!
